How to Use a Castor Oil Pack: A Simple At-Home Evening Ritual

Cozy Castor Oil Pack Evening Ritual

Some evening rituals are complicated. This one is not. A little organic castor oil, a comfortable pack and at least one quiet hour are all you need to turn an old wellness tradition into a simple at-home practice.

I have used castor oil wrapping at different stages of my own digestive-health journey for more than two decades. The way I use it has changed - thankfully, the messy layers of oil-soaked flannel are gone - but the part I value most has stayed the same: it encourages me to slow down, place gentle attention on my abdomen and do something nurturing for my body.

If you are wondering how to use a castor oil pack, where to position it or whether you need heat, this guide takes you through my complete evening ritual step by step.

Your evening ritual at a glance
  • Apply at least two tablespoons of organic castor oil to the soft cotton side.
  • Place the oiled side against your abdomen and secure the pack comfortably.
  • Sixty minutes each day is an amazing place to start.
  • You can wear it for longer or leave it on overnight.
  • Heat is optional, but I personally find it very soothing and calming.

What is a castor oil pack?

A castor oil pack is a soft, reusable wrap designed to hold castor oil against the skin for an extended period. The cotton layer sits against your body, while the outer layer and secure straps help keep the oil contained.

Castor oil comes from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant and is naturally rich in ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid. Castor oil packs have been used for generations, and I have personally used them for years. No matter how much I read or study, some of my greatest learning has come from my own body and from listening to my clients. The results and feedback I have seen over the years have been incredible.

Why make it an evening ritual?

You can wear a castor oil pack during the day, but evening is often the easiest time to be consistent. You are less likely to be racing out the door, and the pack can sit in place while you read, watch television, listen to music or prepare for sleep.

I personally like to wear mine overnight because it feels comfortable and secure. You do not need to do the same. Sixty minutes each day is an amazing place to start, and you can gradually make the ritual your own.

Lying down with your castor oil pack is lovely, but it is not essential. If you do not have time to stop for an hour, the pack can be worn securely under loose clothing while you move around at home. I have even worn mine at work under a baggy shirt when I have felt bloated or more inflamed, particularly before my period.

“It does not have to be another complicated wellness routine. Apply it, secure it, slow down and let that be enough.”

How to use a castor oil pack step by step

1
Prepare your space. Choose a comfortable place where you can sit or lie down for at least 60 minutes. Keep an older T-shirt nearby for your first few uses while you work out the right amount of oil for your pack.
2
Add the castor oil. Pour at least two tablespoons of Inner Wellbeing Organic Castor Oil onto the centre of the soft cotton side. Spread it across the area that will sit against your skin. The fabric should be generously coated without dripping.
3
Position the pack. Place the cotton side directly against your abdomen. Fasten the straps so the pack stays in place without feeling tight or restrictive.
4
Settle in for at least one hour. Use this time to wind down. Read, journal, meditate or simply rest. There is nothing else you need to do.
5
Add gentle warmth if you enjoy it. Heat is not necessary, but I personally love it. I find it very soothing and comforting, and the warmth may help the oil feel more deeply absorbed. If you use a heat pack, follow its instructions and keep the temperature comfortable.
6
Remove and store the pack. Gently wipe away any excess oil and store the pack in a clean, sealed container or bag until your next use.

Where should you place a castor oil pack?

For a general evening abdominal ritual, place the pack over your tummy so the soft cotton area sits comfortably across the abdomen. The pack should feel secure, but it should never compress your body tightly.

How often should you use a castor oil pack?

Consistency matters more than trying to do everything perfectly. I recommend starting with 60 minutes each day and simply noticing how you feel. Yes, you can use a castor oil pack every evening, and you can also wear it for longer or overnight if that suits your routine.

I personally wear mine overnight, but you can begin with one hour and build from there. Keep it simple, comfortable and realistic for your life.

What I have noticed with digestive comfort

Over many years in the clinic, I have had a good number of clients experiencing constipation tell me that using an abdominal castor oil pack helped them open their bowels more easily and experience a much better sense of evacuation. This is not everybody's experience, but I have seen and heard it often enough to consider it an important part of the conversation. Most people also report a flatter tummy and a lot less bloating.

A small human study of 35 older adults with constipation also reported improvements in some symptoms, including less straining and a greater sense of complete evacuation. The study did not find an increase in bowel-movement frequency, but the improvements in how people felt when going to the toilet are still interesting.

Why this ritual is personal to me

In 2000, I had approximately 95% of my large bowel removed. The following year involved repeated hospital visits, bowel twisting, pain and scar tissue. When I later became a client at Taringa Health Centre, castor oil flannel wrapping was introduced as part of the wider digestive support I was receiving. Back then, I simply poured castor oil onto a flannel cloth, placed it over my belly and added a heat pack on top. You can still use this traditional method if you do not want to spend money on a purpose-made pack.

I returned to castor oil after the births of both my children by caesarean section in 2007 and 2010. I began using it consistently again in 2023 after hospital visits showed severe scar tissue and adhesions that were causing me significant pain and problems.

I am not saying that a castor oil pack is a cure or that everybody will experience the same result. However, in my own case, follow-up CT imaging showed a significant improvement in what had previously been described to me as severe scar tissue and adhesions. I cannot say that the castor oil pack alone caused that change, but it was a consistent part of my nightly routine throughout that period.

The ritual feels deeply soothing and helps me care for an area of my body that has been through so much. I wake up with a flatter tummy and, in general, I feel much less bloated and inflamed when I use my castor oil pack consistently.

The old flannel method could also be incredibly messy. That is why I love a purpose-made pack: it holds the oil in place, feels secure around the body and is much easier to make part of real life.

How to care for your castor oil pack

The best way to reduce washing is to keep the oil in the centre of the cotton panel and away from the seams. Apply a modest amount each time rather than oversaturating the pack.

If your pack needs cleaning, follow the care instructions provided with it. Hand washing is gentler than placing an oil-soaked pack in the washing machine. Allow it to dry completely before storing, and replace it according to the current hygiene guidance supplied with your pack.

Important safety guidance

  • Inner Wellbeing Organic Castor Oil is for external use only. Do not drink it.
  • Patch-test the oil before your first full use. Stop if you develop redness, itching, swelling or a rash.
  • Do not apply over broken, infected or irritated skin.
  • Do not use a castor oil pack during pregnancy unless your maternity healthcare professional specifically approves it.
  • If you have recently had surgery or are under medical care, ask your healthcare practitioner whether it is suitable for you.

Castor oil pack FAQs

How much castor oil should I put on the pack?

Use at least two tablespoons on the centre of the soft cotton side. Spread it over the area that will touch your skin so the fabric feels generously coated without dripping.

How long should I leave a castor oil pack on?

Wear the pack for a minimum of 60 minutes. You can leave it on for longer or wear it overnight if it feels comfortable and you have no irritation.

Do castor oil packs need heat?

No. Heat is not necessary. However, I personally find it very soothing and comforting, and gentle warmth may help the oil feel more deeply absorbed. If you use heat, simply keep it at a comfortable temperature and follow the heat pack's instructions.

Can I use a castor oil pack every night?

Yes. I recommend starting with 60 minutes daily, noticing how you feel and building it into your evening routine. You can use the castor oil pack every night and may also choose to wear it overnight.

Can I reuse my castor oil pack?

Yes. The Inner Wellbeing pack is reusable. Keep it clean, store it carefully between uses and follow the supplied washing and replacement guidance.

Is a castor oil pack the same as drinking castor oil?

No. A castor oil pack is used externally. Drinking castor oil acts as a stimulant laxative and can cause cramping, diarrhoea, nausea and dehydration. Inner Wellbeing Organic Castor Oil is not intended for consumption.

Make the ritual your own

You do not need a perfect night-time routine. You do not need to meditate for an hour or complete a long list of wellness tasks. Apply the oil, secure the pack and choose one quiet thing that helps you settle.

Perhaps that is reading ten pages of a book, listening to calming music or simply putting your phone away. The castor oil pack becomes the cue: the rushing part of the day is over, and it is time to come back to yourself.
